May I be on the Map?
Good question, probably the answer is yes if you've got this far, but read on to check.
(Firstly, 'science' as used on the Hidden Science Map includes any Science, Health, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields and is used to mean them all.)
You can be on the map if you have studied a science subject, or trained in a science field, past the age of 18, and you use that knowledge, or those skills, in any way in your current job. This very much includes jobs that would NOT traditionally be seen as science jobs by non-scientists, and jobs that are not in a science field, but where you feel your science education or training has helped.
If you work in science, and see yourself as a science worker, but did not arrive there with traditional science qualifications, you can also be on the map.
You can also be on the map if you are in education or training past 18 in any STEM field, or if you are under 18 on an accredited science apprenticeship, whatever your future ambitions are.
You can also be on the map if you are now retired, but had a career where you used your science education or training, or you worked in a STEM field.
If you have any questions about whether you can be on the map please email: hiddensciencemap@sciencecouncil.com
What about if I already have a profile online?
Ah, yes, good, we absolutely don't want to make you do that all over again. Have the link of your profile ready, and only do the first page of our profile questionnaire. In the section about your 'job title' paste in the link, remembering to paste it all in including the http:// bit. Then our system will turn it into a link to your profile you've prepared earlier. You'll need to fill in all the compulsary questions in the first page, and pin youself to the map where you want to, upload an image please, becasue profiles without images are boring, click save and continue at the bottom, but don't worry about continuing.
Some notes to help you fill in the questionnaire.
Security: If you're at all worried about people knowing too much about you becasue you are on the map please consider the following: you do not have to give your full or real name, you do not have to pin yourself to your exact location, you choose where to pin yourself, and there's no need to make your photo a close up. Your email address will not be shared with any one else.
Your pin won't pop up the moment you press save; becasue the site is for young people your profile is moderated (see below) and then published by hand.
Do have a photo of yourself that you like handy to upload before you start.
For a quick profile, you can leave the questionnaire after the first page if you want, the system will record your information, you can go back in anytime to edit or finish the questionnaire. When it's emailed to you make a note of your password.
There's no need to write more than 150 words in any box, and keep it to less by all means. Please write in short snappy style, no large blocks of text, and write in the first person (I did this, I've done that.)
Please only answer the question you've been asked, e.g. don't get side-tracked telling us about how you ended up in your job in the "Day in the Life" section. We will ask you about how you ended up in your job later.
Please (please!) don't write anything inappropriate for young people to read, including over-technical language, please explain science terms they may not know.
Your text will be moderated by a Hidden Science Map Editor for spellos, typos, science that's too complicated, and anything inappropriate. We won't check with you before publishing a changed profile, but if you have any issues with our moderation please get in touch hiddensciencemap@sciencecouncil.org .
There's more advice on the FAQs page, such as 'What if I work outside the UK?', 'But what if I'm not from the UK?' and 'I don't fit any of your core subject areas, is this map really for me?' and other technical notes.
