Education and route to your job
I did A levels in Maths, Chemistry, Biology and AS French. I then studied Biochemistry at Oxford University, then a PhD in Protein Crystallography at St Andrews University. I worked for Astex Therapeutics in Cambridge for 5 years as a bioinformatics scientist and project manager, then left to have children. I very much wanted to spend time with my children when they were young, but missed the science. Now I write about science from home and can still look after my kids.
Job route: typical, unusual, or a bit of both?
Bit of both
Day in the Life
I have a blissfully quiet session on the computer before my kids wake up. Then I am either looking after the kids during the day, working on my small business, or writing about science. I always stop work at 3pm to pick my eldest up from school and I rarely work in the evenings or weekends.
9 - Nearly as happy as possible
Life outside work
I love running and reading, both possibly in the sunshine. I have recently taken up yoga and done my first triathlon. I love exploring the countryside and camping with my family.
Other ways to decribe your job
My family encouraged me to be the kind of person I was supposed to be.
